Will Wikoff, Week 4, Domestic Ramblings

Week 4:

Last week was quite a slow week for me.  Just as things were beginning to speed up and get more busy two events occurred which brought everything to a grinding halt.  First, some materials we ordered for mice behavioral trials got lost in the mail and did not arrive on time.  Secondly, the Fourth of July split the week into two, causing lab members to take vacation days.  As such I do not really have much to talk about for Week 4.

Instead I am going to talk briefly about my domestic life in Durham NC and about other things that happened.  Living alone has been interesting.  As opposed to Peddie I do not have a roommate nor do I have a dining hall to eat in, so that is certainly different.

This pasta doesn't look like much but it was
really good.
Learning to cook has been interesting.  Before my 10 hour car ride down south with my dad I only knew how to pour cereal, spread Nutella on toasted bread, and “cook” instant noodles.  After my dad left I had to begin feeding myself.  Probably the most difficult part of cooking was getting the ingredients.  It was tedious at first having to bike to the grocery store and load up on as much as I could balance on my handlebars safely (god forbid I forget to buy something I really need).  I suppose it is good that I am getting out more (I am quite far away from campus and so I guess it is good exercise).  As for the actual cooking part, that part is a lot of fun.  I am a bit impatient, so far I haven’t burnt anything because of that and if something is under cooked I tossed it back into the pan for a couple minutes.  Every day I get to try my hand at a new recipe and hope for the best.

While my mind is on food, I have had some of the best chicken wings I have ever had at this place called Heavenly Buffaloes.  The building itself looks sort of sketchy: it is a small, rundown, wooden shack painted neon orange and has a porch supported by neon green and blue posts.  All they sell is wings and it is amazing, I wish we had a “wings place”
in Hightstown.  Before I leave here I want to try at least half of the flavors.

Other things I did last week?  I also saw the new Spiderman movie, I went with my lab buddy named Eric.  He is another high school student at the lab, son of the lab manager.  The movie was pretty good, I liked it but won’t spoil anything here.  Other than Eric almost everyone else from the lab left the state to go vacation (one went to Chicago, another to France, some other to New York).

By now I am just rambling on, so I hope this is a testament to how slow this previous week was.  Hopefully work returns to normal for Week 5, there is a lot I want to do before I leave.  Luckily I am here for 7 weeks.
